The San Francisco Board of Education voted unanimously to give diplomas to 107 high school students who have not met all their graduation requirements — a move that goes against state law.
The California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) is offered to students beginning sophomore year. There are several opportunities to take it, but some students struggled to pass and had to retake it over & over & still did not pass.
Recently, faculty and students from San Francisco International High School showed up at the city’s school board meeting accompanied by their Principal, pleading for help. Their plead was simple... “We need another opportunity to take the CAHSEE or we need a diploma,” said the Principal.
On behalf of his fellow Pleading Students their Leader has issued a statement to the media concerning their situation...
this aint fareit iz as plane as the noos on yo fac and as elementrie as 2+2 beein 5 that our wrights have ben vialatted
(It appears that California’s education system is so bad that it cannot even teach its students how to use Spell & Grammar Check.)
When the Pleading Student Leader was asked about the lack of capitalization, punctuation, spacing, incorrect spelling & inaccurate arithmetic in his statement he responded... All that kind of stuff is no longer necessary. Modern students in America believe only necessary is necessary.
Would I kid u?

Lagniappe: I saw an interesting link at the bottom of the article that gave me the information I researched to write this blog posting. It was entitled...
“In California Thousands of Teachers Missing Needed Credentials”
I said to myself, “Ah ha, self, this is the problem”. But, when I clicked on the link, I was taken to...
“Page Not Found...404 Error...We’re sorry, but you have reached a page that doesn’t exist.”
Their thinking must be that, by not allowing us to read about the problem, the problem will go away...Or will it?

In the 1960's, I was processing in basic AF recruits. Several trends were obvious and I will speak of a few. One was the lower test score on the AFQT of recruits from the south. Next waivers for recruits from criminal and misdemeanors were greater from people of the northeast/NE states. The north east/NE states has the greatest variety of schools and colleges/universities and business/technical schools. Last I mention California, by far the had he highest scores on their test. They had,by far, more junior colleges, colleges and universities. How far they have fallen under the demlibs.
Years ago I served with the Greater New Orleans Foundation which gave grants to various non profits. We gave a $5,000.00 grant to a group in one of the uptown projects for an adult literacy program. The grant was given on the basis of the grant application that was submitted. The group submitted a request for a grant for the second year and our policy was to visit the site and have them do a dog & pony show on what they accomplished with our help during the first year .
We went to the project as they were using a unit there as their location. The group was there and did their presentation and then there was a young man who asked if he could speak to us. He stood up and in his hand he had his diploma from one of the NewO Public schools and said he received it as a graduating senior and then went out and got a job as a truck driver. No written application since he brought his diploma and they got the basic info from him orally to put on their records.
His problem was he could not read his diploma or anything else. This meant he could not read the delivery address or street signs. The company was pleased with his job performances but told him he had to make his deliveries faster as he was always always the last guy to get back with his empty truck. He fessed up and they told him he could work at the warehouse but for less $.
They asked him how he could complete his route if he could not read. He told them the orders were arranged by the company first delivery to last which was done to reduce driving time. He would leave and stop and ask somebody on the street to look at the delivery order to tell him where this location was and did it all day.
The rest of the story he came to this group and learned to read and was a truck driver again. Success for him but how could anyone get through 12 years and no one noticed he could not read? How could he take all the exams to go from one grade to the other?
He said that early on some one did notice but the school system had him tested and his mother was told he had some problem that was correctable but since it increased his mother's check she didn't have him attend whatever he was suppose to resolve the problem.
The school just moved him right on though and he said some teachers gave him oral tests and others just filled the tests in for him. This was during the time that the teachers union ran the school system and Katrina changed that as state took over the failing schools and the requirement that you had to be a union member was out.
Surprise the schools improved their rankings.
I was thinking about your latest blog regarding the S.F. school system, and things are not much different here in Houston. We have a population in Houston of approximately 4.5 million, which includes about 500,000 illegal aliens plus about 1 million residents who were born outside the U.S. As a result we have many, many students that can not speak English and are completely unprepared to enter our school system. So what is the solution: create "Immersion Schools" of course where students are Immersed in the language of their choice and English is taught only as a second language. We have Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese Immersion schools, etc. and the latest is an Arabic Immersion school which just opened up this school year and was met with protesters who were severely criticized by the local media...... The system is in such a mess the Superintendent just resigned this morning. WHAT A MESS!!!!!!
